Alex Kingston has become a worldwide fan favourite in her role as River Song in Doctor Who. When first joining the series for a two part episode in 2008, Alex (and audiences) were sad to think the character of River Song would not be back. But being Doctor Who, anything is possible. In a 2011 interview with the Radio Times, Alex shared some of her thoughts on River Song and the Doctor. She commented, “I wasn’t quite sure about accepting when I was asked to do two episodes. Living in America I hadn’t followed the resurgence of Doctor Who, but I cried when I read the script to Silence in the Library because it was such a sad story – River Song encounters the Doctor in the 51st century. It’s similar to Audrey Niffenegger’s novel The Time Traveler’s Wife – two people who have great love for each other, but are never able to meet in the right space or time. The sadness was of a woman with a close connection to the Doctor who sacrifices herself to save his life. I didn’t expect to be asked back.” Since her first appearances as River Song, Alex Kingston has been in 17 episodes of Doctor Who. As all Doctor Who viewers know, River Song and the Doctor are married. In the Christmas episode of 2015 (her most recent appearances in the series), the story ended with a "they both lived happily ever after." When asked by fans at conventions which Doctor she prefers, Alex comments that they are all the same person and that it is the essence of the Doctor that River Song really loves, no matter how the Doctor appears. Alex Kingston indicates that she enjoys being a part of Doctor Who and gets a kick out of seeing the action figures of River. She is enjoyable to hear and meet at Doctor Who and comic conventions.
